Thai Dara at Gilmore features Thai Boy Bands

Sorry guys, no pictures *sob* My PC had to go to the repairs and they reformatted it, causing me to lose my photos
Anyway, I just had to get this review out, photo or not.
Thai Dara hole-in-the-wall restaurant was introduced to me a couple of weeks back -it’s a new place along Gilmore avenue that’s hard to miss – just look to your left when heading to Greenhills from New Manila along Gilmore.
The place is still new and you can actually chat up the Thai owner – he’s open about getting feedback from the customers and he admits that their food system isn’t perfected yet – it does take a while before the food gets served to you.
The waiters kind of look cool with their headsets (a la call center agent) – this is because the kitchen is upstairs and that’s how they coordinate their orders.
The place is amusing. It even features a small tv playing Thai boy band music videos. The place also promises “authentic Thai street food” – something that will quite amuse your date and impress him/her on how knowledgeable you are on other countries’ cuisine.
We tried it once here and we got the Tom Yum. It came piping hot in a silver heating bowl.
The flavor is quite strong and spicy, however we felt that the soup lacked meat (or i our case, seafood).
We also got barbecued chicken and it was curry-flavored. It was interesting but probably not safe to order for your date – it does feel like I’m tasting curry body odor flavored chicken.
Otherwise, the Tom Yum should suffice and you could just get another meat dish – the sizzling seafood on the other table looked fresh and tasty.
Prepare about P400-P500 for both of you. The place is indeed a hole in the wall, but the food isn’t that cheap. It’s good though – the place’s charm should make up for the slightly higher price, and you’d want to sample a lot of the dishes.
Evaluate your date and see if he or she is the hole-in-the-wall diner type, and he/she would actually find it cool. If you’re in college, then this place is perfect to spend your hard-earned allowance.
The perfect opening line for securing a date for this is, “Are you a Thai fan?”, ala Ben Stiller in Heartbreak Kid.

I thought the food was not really Thai at all. It was more like Thai food as approximated by a recent graduate of a Metro Manila culinary school. Their spring rolls was more Chinese than Thai. The Tom Yum though nicely spicy, was diluted Thai, very bland. The owners adapted to Philippine tastes too quickly.
